CAN I UPGRADE MY EXISTING Website?

The most important question here is, can you be found by a Search Engine easily i.e. Google . needs text

If you can't, more than likely the key words your using in your site are not being recognised by google.

This is one area where you would definitely take some action in remedying.

If your Website is not a very old Website, it may only need to be fined tuned to get it to a modern technological standard.

If you're not visually happy with it we can modernise it for you.

As all Websites are different, each Website would be done on a pro rata basis.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WebsiteS?

"Yes" there is
There are 2 types of Websites:

Static Websites &
Dynamic Websites

Static Website

Is your basic Website much the same as this one. It doesn't do too much!

Dynamic Website

A dynamic Website is a Website that accesses a database to pull information out of, to show to the end users.

This type of Website is far more complex and can do a lot more than a Static Website.

A CMS (Content Management System) is a Dynamic Website

for detailed information about CMS (Content Management System) follow this link

You would get a Dynamic Websites if you wanted to:

  • write your own articles/blogs etc...
  • add new photos / videos etc... and edit or delete any of the above.

These are very powerful Websites where many users could have access to and if required, could edit/add/delete content at their own leisure.

Theses Websites can also implement user and author authorisation rights.

WHATS WRONG WITH THE FREE WebsiteS OFFERED BY BIG COMPANIES?

Nothing, except when you try to find them with a Search Engine, like Google.

The problem with these sites are, they don't have an individual address like a normal Website.

A good analogy would be these Websites live in a building while normal Websites live in houses.

A Website that lives in a house has a unique address while Websites that live in a building all share a common address.

This is where Google gets confused and can't see them, it's that easy.

The other important reason these sites are inferior is because they are not built with good SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in mind.

WHATS the difference between graphic design and web design?

Graphic Design

Graphic Design is the process of creating a visual representation of an object aided by a drawing medium. In our case, computer programs like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

Photoshop is a photo editing program, it creates Raster images.

Illustrator is a Vector based program it creates Vector Images.

Raster images generally would include digital photos and Vector Images would generally include illustrations.

You can convert a Vector image into a Raster image, but cannot convert a Raster Image into a Vector Image.

Raster graphics are the most common and are used for digital photos, icons, and backgrounds.

In fact most images you see on the internet are Raster objects,

This is changing, with a more widely use of a Internet Technology called SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics).

Vector Graphics are made up of paths, which would include lines, shapes, letters etc...

Vector Objects are scalable, this means no matter how big or small you enlarge them, they will always be crisp and clear.

They use a mathematical algorithms to achieve this.

Web Design

Graphic Design
PLUS
User Interface Design
makes up
WEB DESIGN.

Sounds Confusing
It's not!

Some definitions of Web Design also include Web Development which we feel is incorrect.

There is a distinction between the two.

You may of noticed on Trademe, there are jobs for Web Designers, and Jobs for Web Developers.

The two areas of Web Design are:

  • Graphic Design &
  • User Interface Design

Graphic Design has already been discussed.

User Interface Design

User Interface Design again is broken down into

  • User Experience Design &
  • Interactive Design

User Experience Design

User Experience Design is what the user experiences.

examples are:
how the site is laid out , whether there are clear instructions and labeling, the use of icons, the use of colour, contrast, rhythm, balance and style of graphical elements (lines, shapes, texture, color, direction) .

These are just a few elements that a Web Designer has to consider.

Interactive Design

User Interface Design is how well the user understands and interacts with the site.

A Website will not have good interactive design, if the user becomes lost on the site or doesn't know which buttons to press.

Interactive Design must be well thought out and seamlessly blend in with User Experience Design.

WEB DESIGN

Web design is the process of creating Websites

It uses Graphic Design and a well thought out plan of how the Website would function and behave.

The process includes:
Wire Frames Drawings (for more complex projects) to show how the Website is laid out and how it would function and behave e.g. buttons, slide shows etc..

A Photoshop design which would illustrate how the Web Page would be laid out and look. This would be done for all the unique pages of the Website.

Once the design and theoretical functionality of the Website is approved by the client, it is then passed over to a Web Developer.

The next step in the Web Creation Cycle is the Web Development Stage.

Click on this link to find out the difference between Web Design and Graphic Design

WEB DEVELOPMENT

That's the non-design aspect of building Websites We use the latest technologies enabling Website functionality & compatibility with other platforms & devices

The Web Developer will use the designs created by the Graphic Designer to create a working Website that will then be uploaded to a server for the public to view and interact with.

Websites are created using a markup language called HTML.

They are styled with a language called CSS. A language called Javascript would be used to animate the Website.

Lastly a Language called PHP would be used to communicate to a Server e.g. for emails etc... and SQL to store information in a database.

SEO (SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION)

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the name given to a process that attempts to improve search engine rankings.

In other words, it's the technology that tries to make your Web Site appear on the top of the first Google/Bing/Yahoo search result page.

E-COMMERCE

E-commerce (electronic-commerce) refers to a Website with the ability to conduct business over the Internet.

This type of Website would be selling goods or services that the consumer would purchase electronically. Most users would use a Visa, Direct Debit Card or have a Pay Pal account to purchase these Goods or Services.

These types of Websites are CMS (Content Management Systems) with the ability to process electronic transactions.

These Websites are the most complicated and expensive Websites to build.

Please Call us or email for more details as each Website is custom built to the needs of the client.

They give you the owner, the ability to add/edit/delete any Good and Service description, Price and Photograph as needed.

Optimising existing Websites

Optimising an existing Website involves applying the latest Web Standards and Internet Technology together with SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) where needed.

Some Websites may only need some minor tweaks other Websites may need more work to them.

It's really a case of making your Website appear to the Search Engines to be a modern day Website even though, visually it may look very dated.

The search engines are looking at the computer code not the visual Website

A good analogy would be a old classic car having a modern day engine and transmission.

It's the performance of the car that is important, not what it looks like.

Charge Out Rates

website & graphic design

Website Charge Out Rates

Unfortunately one cannot give a definitive dollar number in regards to the cost of a Website as there are so many variables.

A good analogy would be, a person buying a car.
The price of a new car can range from $12,000, to a brand new one priced at $85,000.

Our lowest price charged for a Website is $500. This is a very basic site without any bells or whistles.

We find it better to start from "what amount of money have you budgeted for your Website".

Starting at this point and knowing the nature of your business can give us enough information to direct you to the best possible answer for your situation.

Obviously the cost will be reduced if you supply your own art work, copy text etc...

For Tips READ "How to reduce COSTS on your Website"

Graphic Design Charge Out Rates

The Graphic Design Charge Out Rate is $45 per hour unless an agreement has been made on a per job basis.

Support & Maintenance Costs

Support & Maintenance costs are charged out at $45 a hour. This mainly applies to existing sites, that may need work, on at the Websites owners request.

Any custom work requested by the client, is also charged out at $45 a hour.

There may be occasions where certain work will not warrant this Charge Out Fee. On those occasions, the client will be informed of the nature and reason why they do not apply.

Agreement and Billing Process

Please read " STEPS involved to get a Website Online
The agreement and Billing steps are parts of these processes.

After we have spoken to you and formulated a Project Plan Proposal that you agree with, we would then be ready to undertake the work.

Web Based Work

We break Web based Projects into 3 stages. We require a 30% deposit to start the work initially.

At the second stage we get the web project functioning in its raw state. This illustrates to the client how the finished Web Project will look and function.

A further 35% of the initial cost of the Web Project will be invoiced to the client at this stage.

The final payment is paid on completion of the Web Project.

Printed Media

A Project Plan Proposal is also created and once agreed upon the work can be started.

The Graphic Design process is a lot quicker than any web based work therefore we require a 40% deposit to start the work initially

The balance is paid on completion of the project.

How to reduce COSTS on your Website

Things you should know

The Text, Graphic Images (e.g. photos), and Audio content of your Website are an ADDED COST.

If possible, we prefer that you supply as much of the TEXT content, Graphic Images (e.g. photos), Video and Audio as possible.

How do I write text content for Website?

Writing the content is not such a daunting task as it may sound.

It's very similar to a Book.

The title of the Book is the Website's name.

The Chapter's are the titles of the individual Web pages.

It's better to have many short Chapters than just to have a few long Chapters.

The Subtitles are the headings of the subject you are writing about.

The Paragraphs contain the text about the subject with any accompanying photos .

The index of the book would represent the navigation bar at the top of the Web page i.e. buttons (and any drop down buttons).

Supplying your text as a word document would be preferable. But any text editor format is acceptable.

Don't forget to read Website Ranking SEO before you start writing any content. It's very important that you do.

What makes a good Website?

What makes a good Website?

Websites have evolved
over the last few years.

Websites should, be designed overall for:
  • your target audience
  • Search Engine Optimization SEO

and not for your own specific tastes.

You need to understand what your customers want from their perspective, not from your own.

Using the appropriate colours helps because they have a psychology meanings e.g. you wouldn't use the colour "red" for a Bank Website.

Using good Illustrations/photos/icons on any Website is crucial.

Users will either stay on your Website longer and click through other pages of your site because of them.

It's the user, and their needs that will keep your website alive and flourishing.

The 7 basic guidelines for a Website are:

  1. be quick to download
  2. be visually appealing
  3. the content is interesting and original
  4. be easy to find (Good SEO)
  5. be easy to navigate
  6. have a consistent page layout and design
  7. be easy to read

What is web site "content"?

There is a internet saying

"Content is King"

needs text

Content meaning:
Text, Graphic Images, Animation, and Audio that make up a Website.

High Quality Content makes the difference between an average Website and a Great Website.

Content must be:

  • Original - including images
  • Factual - if cross referenced
  • Legible
  • Interesting and/or Alluring

Good Content makes for Great Websites!

What is the main Goal of a Website?

All Users have one common trait.
They are all searching for content in its various forms.

needs text

The main goal of a Website is to get as many visitors as possible

If this is the case:

Why should someone visit your web site?

Why should they return to your web site?

What separates your Website from your competitors Websites?

Below answers the above questions.

Why should someone visit your web site?

The public visits your website for information/content.

Therefore, if you provide high quality information/content you will attract an audience.

High quality information/content includes the concept of supplying more detailed information.

For a commerce site it is a combination of High quality information/content, detailed information and price of the products/services.

Low quality information/content does not attract a following nor does rate well with Search Engine Ranking.

It has a double negative effect.

Why should they return to your web site?

Your visitors will normally return to your site if it is up to date and/or content is being constantly added/changed.

A good analogy would be watching a movie opposed to watching a series where each week there is a new story with the same actors and sets.

Most people only watch a movie once opposed to a series where they will watch it religiously week in and week out.

A good time frame for adding/changing content would be between 1 to 3 months.

Content needs to be credible. Credibility is an important part of the user experience

What separates you from your competition?

The question here is "What is your unique selling point (USP)".

What makes you different from your competition.

You need to back it up with Customer Testimonials /Graphs/Data or Unique Content.

The public likes to be reassured that they are dealing with a credible Website.

Responsive Design Why is it so important?

What is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive Web Design is a single Website designed to be responsive to different devices and screen sizes. .

Devices meaning Desktop Computers, Notebooks, Tablets, and Smartphone's.

needs text

The word " responsive " in this context means - a Website that will reduce or enlarge in size to fit the screen it is being displayed on.

When the Website rearranges itself, to fit a new screen size, it appears that it was custom designed for that particular screen size.

In this process, any of the Website content, can be dropped if desired when reducing in screen size.

needs text

Why would you own a Responsive Website?

The main reasons are:

  • Supports all devices
  • One site to rule them all
  • Hardware technology invented in the future
  • It's a SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) essential for Mobile Devices

These are explained below

1) Supports all devices i.e. Desktop Computers, Notebooks, Tablets, and Smartphone's etc...

A good example would be a potential customer finds your product on a Desktop/Notebook computer. They are in town and they only have their Smartphone with them.
If your web site was designed only for Notebook/desktop computers they would have difficulty viewing or even finding it, due to Google's Mobile search exclusion of Notebook/desktop Websites.

2) One site to rule them all

The benefits are:

  • It easier to mange
  • it's easier to update
  • it's cheaper
  • and most of all it's an important factor in SEO (search engine optimization) which will only benefit your business, by making your Website more accessible, to more people, in different locations, with different devices.

3) Hardware technology invented in the future

Different devices with new screen sizes and resolutions are emerging every year.
What's great about responsive Websites is that they are fluid and they will adapt to these new screen sizes automatically. There is no need for any updates.

4) SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

If you do a search on a mobile device, a Website that is not responsive, more than likely it won't show on the first few search result pages due to Google's new search rules for mobile devices.

This could mean lost sales or exposure for a business.

STEPS involved to get a Website Online

Web Project Plan Proposal Estimate & Web Project Plan

All Web Projects start and finish with a Website Project Plan.

The Project Plan is basically a ROAD-MAP of what the client wants for their Website and how it will be accomplished.

This plan would include the investigative part e.g. verbal questions to graphic files e.g. Photoshop files etc... and related documents.

It starts off with a series of questions to establish the what's, how's, and the who's of the project.

An example of some of the questions are:

  • What type of website do you want?
  • Is this a brand new site or do you want to update an existing site?
  • Have you prepared a detailed requirements document (what I would like in my Website)?
  • Have your graphics already been created for the site?
  • Will you use multimedia elements (audio, video, etc.) on the site?
  • How much content do you currently have and how much will need to be created?
  • Have you got any existing social media channels?
  • How much time do you want to spend on SEO (search engine optimization)
  • Who is going to maintain the site after it has been launched?

It then would go into detail about:

  • Online brand/logo - have you got one?
  • perceived Website structure - how would you like it structured?
  • perceived Website functionality - what types of functionality would you like to incorporate in it?

The easiest way to achieve this would be for the client to peruse the Internet for Internet Websites that they may want their Website to function or look similar too.

We also, would do some research i.e. look at your competition, for their strengths, weaknesses, and threats they may pose and try to find any opportunities that may make you stand out from them.

From the description and information given from the client and our research, Fluid Design would then send out a Project Plan Proposal Estimate to the client. This would also include the cost of the Website.

If the client is happy with the Proposal they will sign it and return it, so work on their Website can begin.

In cases where the client is not happy with the Proposal, amendments would be made .

Once we get the go head from the client, the following Website Stages below would be initiated.

What are the Basic Website Stages?

The Basic Website/Project stages are:

  1. Get a " Domain Name " if the client has not got one.
(NB/ We prefer the client does this, but we can if requested.)
  2. Find a " Hosting Company " for your Website if he client has not got one.
(NB/ again, we prefer the client does this, but we can if requested.)
  3. Web Design
    3.1) Planning
3.2) User Interface Design (Sitemap, Wireframes) & Functionality of Website
3.3) Visual Design - Graphic Design
  4. Development Time
    (Programming)
  5. Testing and Launching of Website
  6. Continued Website Maintenance
    (if required by the client)
  7. Marketing Your Website Online
    (if required by the client)
READ Do it yourself Online Marketing
  8. Client Training / Documentation
    (if required by the client)

The process can also be broken up on a percentage basis as follows:

  • 15% Planning
  • 25% Interface Design
  • 50% Programming
  • 5% Testing and Launching of Website
  • 5% Project Management & Administration

On occasions any of the above may take longer due to unforeseen circumstances.

We are often asked to design LOGOS.

Branding/Identity Development – We start with a three-hour process that generates about three rough logo concepts.

Once the client has chosen a design, we then polish the design through a series of edits to arrive at a final version.

What is & How to get a Domain Name

A DOMAIN name is a unique name that identifies your website. It's like an address for a house. It's a means to find your website among millions of other Websites.

Your domain name would appear in the address bar at the top of the web browser.

There are Companies whose business is selling Domain names, they can be found on the Internet.

Domain names are cheap to register, though they must be renewed every year or every few years dependent on how you have purchased them.

"mywebsite" may be your Domain name.

The address for your web site if you were to use the prefix ".co.nz " would be:
"mywebsite.co.nz".

Other prefixes available for New Zealand are:
".kiwi" ".nz" etc...

Do it yourself Online Marketing

What is Online Marketing?

As we well know,
Digital Marketing is an Ongoing process.

Digital Marketing means processes involved in promoting and selling and distributing a product or service.

The key word here is "promoting" or in other words "advertising", in our case "on the internet".

The following, lists ways a business could promote their business Online and are further discussed below:

  • Blogs/Article writing for your Website
  • Blogs/Article writing for other Websites
  • Newsletters
  • Business Directories
  • Other Websites
  • Using your own Website Statistical Data

Blog / Article writing for your Website

These articles increase
your ranking in SEO

Google loves them because it's an indicator to them that your Website is up to date and is evolving.

It's also a great way to introduce new keywords and keyword phrases for SEO

The other spin off is, it gives new content for existing visitors to read and more variety for new visitors.

It's a great way of keeping everybody informed to the latest technological and general news of your business.

Blog / Article writing for other Websites

This is a great way of creating
in-links to your Website

Just submit your article with a link to your Website.

This also helps greatly in the SEO process.

It's just tells Google you have friends i.e. links to other Websites.

They rank popular Websites higher.

Newsletters

Having a newsletter
helps in many ways

You collect e-mail addresses through the subscription process

It's an opportunity to create new sales through promotions

You can inform subscribers of any breaking news, new events, products or services

Another opportunity for article writing is, it will keep an ongoing interest in your business

Business Directories

There are many business directories online where you can list your Website. A good example is the "Yellow Pages".

Some directories ask for a small fee. while others are Free. These again help greatly in the SEO process.

Some people may prefer to go to a directory because of its credibility rather than doing a Google search.

Other Websites

Another great form of promotion and SEO building is to get a link on a Website that points to your Website.

The trick here is to find Websites that will benefit from having a link pointing to your Website.

This is similar to business directories except, that these Websites have a genuine interest in your Website because it gives their Website added value.

Using your own Website Statistical Data

Each Website has its own set of Statistical Tools.

These tools are Free. They are provided by your Hosting Company.

A Hosting Company is a company that allows you to place your Website on their Server so the public can view it.

All Websites have this service. How good they are depends on the Hosting Company.

These tools are great to analyze all the incoming traffic to your site

With these tools you can see from what geographical location your visitors are coming from and much more.

Website ranking     SEO

what is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)?

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the name given to a process that attempts to improve search engine rankings.

In other words, it's the technology that tries to make your Website appear on the top of the first Google/Bing/Yahoo search result page.

Why have a Website if nobody can find you online?

needs text

We offer a FREE No Charge SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) assessment for existing Websites.

We don't make wild claims that we can get you on the first search result page in a matter of weeks or months.

Only if it was that "easy".

"Yes" if you pay Google/Bing/Yahoo, your Website will come up on the first page.

Most businesses would rather have their Websites appear at the top of a search page organically (i.e. not to pay) .

It takes time, the clever use of words - excellent modern day programming techniques and following a tailored made process for each individual Website.

One has to think about it realistically.

For example - if there was one plumber in Wellington named No.1 Plumbing.

Obviously "No.1 Plumbing" would rank on the number one spot on the first search result page because they are the only plumbers in Wellington. They have got no competition.

What if there were 100 plumbers?

Get the picture! Only 10 search results on average, fit on one page. That means there will be 10 search result PAGES to display all 100 plumbers.

If all 100 plumbers had there sites done by SEO professionals there still there would only be 10 places on the first page.

What makes the difference is your site being up to date with what the Search Engines are looking for e.g. Google.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a process that you have to work at constantly and be aware of what your competitors are doing.

What's matters the most in SEO ?

The words used in your Website are a key players in SEO (search Engine Optimisation)

The key here is to use words that are related to your business.

Words are what search engines can understand.

They cannot understand photos unless they are accompanied with words.
